Learn how to operate support equipment

The course covers the licensing, legislative and regulatory requirements as well as practical components including completing a risk assessment for the operation of the equipment, completing routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrating knowledge of the main operating controls of the equipment, and then operating the equipment while maintaining duty of care responsibilities. 

Courses can include:

  • Telescopic Handler (under 3 tonne GVM)

  • Excavator 

  • Backhoe 

  • Vibrator Roller 

  • Sheep Foot Roller 

  • Front End Loader 

  • Integrated Tool Carrier 

  • Skid Steer Loader

Course content

The practical component includes completing a Risk Analysis for the operation of the equipment, completing the routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrating knowledge of the main operating controls of the equipment, and then operating the equipment: 

With bucket attachment:

  • Fill bucket efficiently 

  • Dump material 

  • Spread bucket/s of material 

  • Level the material 

  • Load a truck or hopper (if available) 

 

With other attachments: 

  • Conduct routine checks 

  • Plan work 

  • Check controls and equipment 

  • Shift load 

  • Shut down equipment, secure site 

  • Operate as per manufacturer’s instructions/operator’s manual 

  • Hazard identification and control measures (complete risk assessment for equipment)

Front End Loader course content

Training is conducted on client’s premises including licensing, legislative and regulatory theory requirements as well as safe work practices, completing a risk assessment for the operation of the front end loader, completing the routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrate knowledge of the main operating controls of the front end loader, and then operating the front end loader to: 

  • Plan work 
  • Duty of care of all people in the workplace 
  • Hazard identification and control measures (‘Take 5’ Risk Assessment) 
  • Routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual 
    • Conduct pre-start, pre-operational and post-operational inspection 
    • Check controls and equipment 
  • Operate as per manufacturer’s instructions (operator’s manual) 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the operating controls 
  • Shift load – Operate the front end loader to: 
    • Push soil up 
    • Fill bucket efficiently 
    • Dump material on a pile 
    • Spread bucket/s of material 
    • Level the material 
    • Load a truck or hopper (if available) 
  • Change and use other attachment/s 
    • As required 
  • Shut down equipment and secure site 

Excavator course content

Training conducted on client’s premises includes theory covering licensing, legislative and regulatory requirements as well as safe work practices, completing a risk assessment for the operation of the excavator, completing the routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrate knowledge of the main operating controls of the excavator, and then operating the excavator to: 

  • Plan work 
  • Duty of care of all people in the workplace 
  • Hazard identification and control measures (‘Take 5’ Risk Assessment) 
  • Routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual 
    • Conduct pre-start, pre-operational and post-operational inspection 
    • Check controls and equipment 
  • Operate as per manufacturer’s instructions (operator’s manual) 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the operating controls 
  • Shift load – Operate the excavator to: 
    • Fill bucket efficiently (or use relevant attachment to move load) 
    • Dump material on a pile 
    • Dig trench to specified depth (or by simulation) 
    • Load a truck or hopper (if applicable) 
  • Change and use other attachment/s 
    • As required 
  • Shut down equipment and secure site 

Skid Steer Loader course content

Training is conducted on client’s premises including licensing, legislative and regulatory theory requirements as well as safe work practices, completing a risk assessment for the operation of the skid steer loader, completing the routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrate knowledge of the main operating controls of the skid steer loader, and then operating the skid steer loader to: 

  • Plan work 
  • Duty of care of all people in the workplace  
  • Hazard identification and control measures (complete a risk assessment for the skid steer loader) 
  • Routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual 
    • Conduct pre-start, pre-operational and post-operational inspection 
    • Check controls and equipment 
  • Operate as per manufacturer’s instructions (operator’s manual) 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the operating controls 
  • Shift load – Operate the skid steer loader to: 
    • Push up material 
    • Fill bucket efficiently 
    • Dump material on a pile 
    • Spread bucket/s of material 
    • Level the material 
    • Load a truck or hopper (if available) 
  • Change and use other attachment/s 
    • As required 
  • Shut down equipment and secure site 

Telehandler course content

Training is conducted on client’s premises including licensing, legislative and regulatory theory requirements as well as safe work practices, completing a risk assessment for the operation of the telehandler, completing the routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual, demonstrate knowledge of the main operating controls of the telehandler, and then operating the telehandler to: 

  • Plan work 
  • Duty of care of all people in the workplace  
  • Hazard identification and control measures (complete a risk assessment for the skid steer loader) 
  • Routine checks in line with site procedures / operator’s manual 
    • Conduct pre-start, pre-operational and post-operational inspection 
    • Check controls and equipment 
  • Operate as per manufacturer’s instructions (operator’s manual) 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the operating controls 
  • Demonstrate different steering modes 
  • Bucket attachment - Shift load: 
    • Push up material 
    • Fill bucket efficiently 
    • Dump material on a pile 
    • Spread bucket/s of material 
    • Level the material 
    • Load a truck or hopper (if available) 
  • Forks: 
    • Stack and unstack loads 
    • Travel with loaded forks 
    • Load/unload a truck (if available) 
  • Change and use other attachment/s 
    • As required 
  • Shut down equipment and secure site

Certification & assessment

Upon successful completion, attendees will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment detailing the unit of competency completed, as well as a wallet-sized card (record of training) detailing the machinery trained on.
